Identity thieves may claim their ?share? from the diseased
As the identity thieves are working on new methods of defrauding people, the thefts of identities of deceased persons are on the rise. Generally the relatives of the deceased person do not act swiftly to complete the paperwork due to emotional stress and the thieves take the benefit of such delays.
It is common for such thieves to search the obituary column of newspapers. Many details like full name of the person, date of birth and the name of the hospital in which the person died can be obtained easily. After getting such details, the thieves try to access the database of that hospital to get more information like social security number of the deceased person. There is another way also available for the thieves – checking the social security death index to find out information on persons died recently.
Most of the thieves try to make quick buck by using this information. However some ‘advanced’ thieves will apply for fresh credit to make more money. They may sell this information to illegal immigrants also to impersonate the deceased person for immigration benefits.
The date of close relative is really a painful experience but it can become much more painful if the identity of such deceased person is stolen and misused. To avoid such pain, keep in mind the following precautions –
Draft carefully the information to be released in the newspapers in obituary column. You should not write unnecessary information like date of birth and the address. This provides a big clue to the identity thieves. You should take out many copies of the death certificate quickly and summit them the financial institutions and banks where the deceased person had an account. You should personally contact all the financial institutions, credit card companies, mortgage companies and stockbrokers and to any other institution where the deceased had an account. It is advisable to request the closure of such accounts immediately with a remark that the account holder is dead. This is important to prevent opening of any new account. You should also report the death to all three credit bureaus as soon as possible. You should support your communication with a copy of the death certificate. You should inform immediately to the social security administration about the death of the person. You should contact the motor vehicles department and inform them about the death to prevent misuse of the driver’s license. You should request the department to cancel the driver’s license by submitting a copy of the death certificate. Do not throw any utility bills or bank statements in the name of diseased person in the garbage. You should shred all these papers to ensure that no one will be able to find out anything from these documents. After a reasonable time of about 45 to 60 days, request for a copy of the credit report for the deceased person from all three credit bureaus to ensure that the fact of death is entered in the credit report and no new transaction is reported there.
The crimes of identity theft have reached such a new height that even the dead are subject to the threat of misuse of identity. It is your duty to prevent such misuse to protect your loved ones even after their death.

How to Find Vital Statistics Online
Vital statistics documents are found in different places depending on the type of document you desire. Each state has a slightly different set up for their legal documents, but fortunately, you can now find just about everything online. The following is a basic primer of where to look and what to expect.
Finding a Birth Certificates
For a copy of your birth certificate, you will want to contact the state in which the birth took place. Some states maintain statewide databases. Others have each county maintain their own records.
Once you have found which department holds your birth certificate, you will need to contact them with your information. Date of birth, name, sex, location of the birth, and parents names are all commonly requested data. Additionally, you will need to prove who you are either with a driver’s license or passport and will need your address. It generally takes several weeks to get your document.
Finding Marriage Licenses
Generally, marriage licenses are kept by the county clerk’s office in the county where the marriage took place. If you want to get a copy, you will need to contact the appropriate county with the name of the married parties, including the bride’s maiden name. The date of the marriage, the location of the ceremony, and your reason for needing a copy will also be necessary.
Once again, you will need to provide your name, address, and purpose when requesting a marriage license. If the couple has passed on, it is often easier to get a copy, especially if you explain you are doing a genealogical search.
How to Find a Death Certificate
If you need a copy of a certificate of death, you will need to contact the local vital statistics office. Explain, briefly and accurately, your need for the document.
Provide the deceased’s name, date of death, gender, and alternate spellings of the name that were commonly used by the individual. Define your relationship to the person. Plan to send along a copy of your identification as well.
The other way to search out information about people who have died is to check with the Social Security Administration Bureau. As long as the death occurred after 1962, the Social Security Death Index should have information available for you. This source has the advantage of providing additional details filed with the Social Security application, and the records are publicly available online.
As you can see, finding this kind of data can be time consuming and challenging. I recommend that you opt to use a search service online instead. Use online sites with vital statistics information to help you save time and reduce frustration. They can pull up all the information you need with much less effort on your part.

The Interactive Side of ?Footnote.com? for Genealogists
Footnote.com is a great site for genealogists! There are over 57 million original documents that provide valuable and rich information concerning our ancestors. This is a great resource of records that have previously been available only at the National Archives. Now the records are digitized, indexed and at your fingertips on your home computer.
There is also another side of Footnote that many people are unaware of. Footnote.com now has the 1860 and 1930 Census’s, the Vietnam Wall, the Arizona Memorial and Footnote Pages (the Social Security Death Index) that are all interactive. Anyone doing family history should be thrilled with the ramifications of what Footnote has done. If you have a shoebox full of information; documents, pictures, hand written notes and letters you now have a platform to share these with family members and friends. Once these items are scanned and uploaded they become a permanent part (as long as the publisher wishes) of the collections they are uploaded to.
Anyone can register for free on Footnote http://www.footnote.com/choose-a-plan/ and have full access to all member contributed content and the creation of your own account. With that access you can upload an unlimited amount of material and contribute as much as you like to the interactive collections on the site. You may create your own gallery, annotate, save and control your contributions. Once you write your articles they can be published directly on the site. Within your gallery you are able to keep track of the views to each item you have published.
An example of what can happen to an article you post is the following. My father lived for sixty-two years. After he passed away I realized that he never felt successful. His life did not go as he pictured it would. My sister and I decided to collaborate in writing his story. We gathered up pictures and documents to go along with it and published our father’s story on Footnotes website: http://www.footnote.com/page/1853_willis_h_bell_a_life_worth_knowingby/ . Without the Footnote website his story would never have reached the 23,000 plus people who have currently viewed it. My sister and I believe our father would be very happy to know that we have honored his memory by writing and publishing his story. If you go to Google and type in Willis H Bell, the article on Footnote will be at the top of the page!
Our shared stories bring us together in meaningful ways. Take a look at this site and get hooked on history!
