Roosevelt
“It’s hard to remember now, but before Social Security, nearly half of America’s seniors lived in poverty. After a lifetime of playing by the rules and working hard, there was no guarantee of a secure retirement. “My grandfather, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and a majority of Americans thought that was wrong. “They believed that lifting our seniors out of poverty is a reflection of our nation’s core values. “That’s why my grandfather signed the Social Security act seventy three years ago today. One of the great successes of the 20th Century, today Social Security lifts nearly 13 million seniors and 1.3 million children out of poverty. “Back in 1935, a small minority did not share those values. They opposed the creation of Social Security because they believed that government should not have a role in ensuring a retirement with dignity or helping seniors stay out of poverty. They said, “You’re on your own”. “John McCain agrees with that old way of thinking. Like President Bush, he wants to privatize our Social Security, turning it into a gamble with our futures, and making 8.6 million American seniors vulnerable to poverty. John McCain has even said Social Security is “a disgrace”. “I couldn’t disagree more. “Our Social Security isn’t a disgrace; it’s a compact, a trust between generations of Americans. It’s a reflection of our values. “On the 70th anniversary of Social Security, Americans stood together and said no to George Bush’s attempt to privatize Social Security. “On …

well imean we need to learn from the past but people who say that are ignorant all white people originate from europe so if it wasent for european countrys we wouldent exist lol
Oops, hit the “Post Comment”-button by accident…
And the past is of course completely off topic in political arguments… No offense in my previous comment, but really… No country is perfect, neither is Denmark, nor any other country…
I just believe that the american government needs a bit more balance between socialism and liberalism (not sure if it’s called that in english)… But hopefully it will become better… It may not, but i hope it does…
Apparently there’s a lot of different opinions at excactly that topic. Some people think that it works perfectly, but perhaps it’s because they haven’t seen the problems those systems cause… But i sure see a lot of people who say stuff like that, especially by referring to “how U.S.A. saved our asses” during ww2 and the Vietnam war…
yea but this country is rediculous all i ever here is “were number one” but that cant be when our educatin system is terrible our healthcare system sucks were still adicted to forighn oil and dontcare about who we go to war with as long as we kill muslims its the biggest load of bs out there and i hope obama will change that hopefully but i have doubts
Excactly! I’ve never been to America, but i find politics and such interesting, and when watching videos at Youtube, it’s almost impossible not to bump into political arguments in the comments section of any video that contains either the names “Obama” or “McCain”…
And yeah, people always tend to think their own countries are better, especially when they’re arguing with someone. They just forget about the mistakes of their own…
i am an american but my father is from wales and because of that i have seen a lot of europe and think there systems are awsome we need to stop competing for the “were the best country award and just take care of what we have
@91jew
Well, said, mate, i totally agree. I’m from Denmark, and i can tell it works great here. We have (one of) the highest tax rates in the world (somewhere about 50%), but on the other hand, we get a lot of important things, like education, medical help, library acces and such, completely free. (Okay, i’m guessing you’re american from your comment, but heck, i dunno…)
you are wrong fascism is the developement of class structure (which is not socialist) focus on supporting your singular country not the rest of the world and your current government (which is not elected by democracy) though pure sociallism is not the way to go it is not even close to fascism and blending a little bit of socialism into our capitalist society has worked in other countries and i personally believe that it would work here
He does not quite have the same charm he grandpa had.
What is missed here is the fract that the government can’t lift the population as a whole out of poverty. Certainly it can create a narrow group of rich men. But the only thing that creates prosperity is productivity and the free market. The only thing that guarantees a retirement is productivity, savings, and the free market. Social Security is a ponzi scheme. It isn’t based upon income-generating investment.
Several nations, including Chile, have had incredible gains from privatizing SS. We have everything to gain and very little to lose from privatizing our own system. It’s time we do it. Government shouldn’t be in the business of retirement. It should be the individual’s responsibility. We’re not “all in this together.” We’re individuals first. We just collectively engage in society because it’s most advantageous.
Wrong again, dumbo. Fascism is way more socialist than capitalist. And the “corporatism” quote from Mussolini isn’t even confirmed. No one really knows where it came from. Plus, any historian knows that “corporations” in Mussolini’s Italy were NOT the same as what we refer to now with that word. “Corporations” in Fascist Italy were boards of elites in different industries and societal sectors that ran that particular part of society.
The arguments against privatizing SS are incredibly weak. If you were able to use your payroll tax and invest it, you’d get about 8X more return on your investment than with the small-ass social security checks seniors currently get every month. I’d rather put my retirement in MY hands than the government’s.
Actually, the current system IS a disgrace after all. Don’t force me to pay for someone else’s retirement. Don’t force me to pay for retirement money the gov’t handles. Screw them.
Exactly. It’s a ponzi scheme. People need to invest for their OWN retirement, not force me to pay for it. It’s ridiculous. If I wanted to opt out and not pay payroll tax, I couldn’t.
WTF? ssc is f-ed up. why not privatze it
it will not be there for me.
if the demos would keep their hands out of it maybe i would get some.
but i got pay for the porkulius bill.
what a load of shit
Haha. “At the expense of the future generation”. That’s priceless.
Look, if you work from the age of 18 (or earlier) until you’re 65, you deserve better than to just die in a gutter after you can’t work anymore.
In fact, ANY citizen of this country deserves better than to just be cast aside and expected to die in the gutter.
It’s pretty sad that we’re the only modern nation who’s general population is this greedy. And where has this greed gotten us? #40-something in education, health, etc.
I don’t think you know what a Ponzi Scam is.
US people should take a look at how Social Security actually works. Do not support this program just because senior citizen can get money every month in the expense of future generation. If the senior citizen know that he/she is gonna put huge burden on his children/grandchildren because of this program, Out of parents’ love to their children, I bet he/she will choose to suffer instead of taking money from social security.
Social Security is just ponzi scam….Can’t believe there ar people who actually praise this POS program.
namedropping much?
other then that ok vid, although a little rosy
One of the best U.S president
