Universal Background Screening Introduces Identity Verification Solutions

The announcement was made in conjunction with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) 58th Annual Conference and Expo in Washington, DC.
Universal’s SSNsight™ product works in conjunction with the company’s Social Security Address/Alias Trace to identify applicants who may be using illegitimate or stolen social security numbers. The expanded product first determines an association between an applicant’s name and social security number, as well as additional names affiliated with the SSN and an address history compiled from a variety of sources.
SSNsight identifies the state and year of issue for an applicant’s social security number. Finally, unlike trace products offered by other screening companies, SSNsight includes a search of the Social Security Administration’s Death Master Index to determine if death benefits have been paid for the SSN provided.
Simplified, Real-time I-9 Compliance
The Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986 legally mandated that employers verify the employment eligibility status of newly-hired employees and made it unlawful for employers to knowingly hire or continue to employ unauthorized workers. Since that time, employers have been required to collect identification cards and documents, complete complicated forms and essentially accept the legitimacy of identification documents at face value. Employers had no way to quickly, accurately and legally determine a new hire’s identity and legal right to work through official government sources.
Through the company’s partnership with Form I-9 Compliance, Universal Background Screening’s Electronic I-9 product empowers employers with online tools to quickly, easily and legally conduct right to work verifications for new employees. This unique solution allows employers to accurately and officially confirm the identity and legal authorization to work of new hires while decreasing human error in the completion of I-9 forms. Form I-9 Compliance is the first federally-approved Designated Agent of the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration for Form I-9 employment verifications. As National Consumer Protection Week comes to an end, it is important to remember the tactics to protect yourself against identity theft. Identity theft is currently the number one consumer fraud in the country. Millions of people were affected by some sort of identity fraud last year. To reduce the possibility of becoming a victim of identity theft, here are a few measures you should consider taking:
· Shred all documents that contain social security numbers or account numbers. This includes paycheck stubs, monthly bank statements, and credit card receipts with full credit card numbers.
· Remember to take in your mail every day. With everyoneÂs busy schedule, checking the mail can often get overlooked. Unsecured mail boxes are goldmines for id thieves who can intercept pre-approved credit card offers or even the actual credit card itself.
· Use different passwords. Vary up the passwords you use, make sure you donÂt have one password for all of your personal information. In addition, it is a good idea to use numbers, caps, and letters in your password so that it is harder to guess.

· Sign up for a credit monitoring service. Identity theft victims often find out that their identities have been stolen far too late. Credit bureaus offer credit monitoring services that alert you once someone opens up a credit line in your name. This way, you can detect identity fraud early to avoid unnecessary stress.

Identity thieves may claim their ?share? from the diseased
As the identity thieves are working on new methods of defrauding people, the thefts of identities of deceased persons are on the rise. Generally the relatives of the deceased person do not act swiftly to complete the paperwork due to emotional stress and the thieves take the benefit of such delays.
It is common for such thieves to search the obituary column of newspapers. Many details like full name of the person, date of birth and the name of the hospital in which the person died can be obtained easily. After getting such details, the thieves try to access the database of that hospital to get more information like social security number of the deceased person. There is another way also available for the thieves – checking the social security death index to find out information on persons died recently.
Most of the thieves try to make quick buck by using this information. However some ‘advanced’ thieves will apply for fresh credit to make more money. They may sell this information to illegal immigrants also to impersonate the deceased person for immigration benefits.
The date of close relative is really a painful experience but it can become much more painful if the identity of such deceased person is stolen and misused. To avoid such pain, keep in mind the following precautions –
Draft carefully the information to be released in the newspapers in obituary column. You should not write unnecessary information like date of birth and the address. This provides a big clue to the identity thieves. You should take out many copies of the death certificate quickly and summit them the financial institutions and banks where the deceased person had an account. You should personally contact all the financial institutions, credit card companies, mortgage companies and stockbrokers and to any other institution where the deceased had an account. It is advisable to request the closure of such accounts immediately with a remark that the account holder is dead. This is important to prevent opening of any new account. You should also report the death to all three credit bureaus as soon as possible. You should support your communication with a copy of the death certificate. You should inform immediately to the social security administration about the death of the person. You should contact the motor vehicles department and inform them about the death to prevent misuse of the driver’s license. You should request the department to cancel the driver’s license by submitting a copy of the death certificate. Do not throw any utility bills or bank statements in the name of diseased person in the garbage. You should shred all these papers to ensure that no one will be able to find out anything from these documents. After a reasonable time of about 45 to 60 days, request for a copy of the credit report for the deceased person from all three credit bureaus to ensure that the fact of death is entered in the credit report and no new transaction is reported there.
The crimes of identity theft have reached such a new height that even the dead are subject to the threat of misuse of identity. It is your duty to prevent such misuse to protect your loved ones even after their death.
